Patek is believed to have served as the assistant for the field coordinator of the 2002 bombings in Bali, Indonesia, which killed 202 people. Patek was born in 1970 and is a Javanese Arabic man, 166 cm tall, weighing 60 kg, with a brown complexion. He is also known as Umar Kecil, Umar (Arab), Pa'tek, Pak Taek, Abu Syekh, and Zacky.

Local militants have also proven to be dynamic, devising new groups, alliances and tactics in response to pressure from authorities. A series of mail bombs targeting a key antiterror official and other prominent figures earlier this month is believed to be the work of militants formerly active with JI. Four people were injured in a botched attempt to defuse one of the bombs.
